Kuwana Ishidori Festival
Before China, we spent some time doing the summer festival circuit around Yokkaichi. The main festival we went to was the Japan-famous Kuwana Ishidori Festival, just north of us - said to be the loudest festival in Japan. We believe them.
The festival consists of loads of traditional floats circling their way through the city towards the central shrine. Each is festooned with candle-lit lanterns and incredible wooden decorations; some also have puppets. As they proceed, drums and gongs are banged at incredible volume, usually by children who have an officially sanctioned excuse to thwack things noisily.
