Shikoku, island of heavenly udon

Of course that's not what the name literally means, but anyhow...

We spent the first week of the year with Sam's dad in Shikoku, with a visit to beautiful Yokkaichi tacked on at the end. Hereunder, photos. Much udon was eaten, and may onsens (hot spring baths) were taken, but there's no photos of that.

Beautiful old tea-house in Ritsurin-koen, Takamatsu. We had traditional matcha and sweets, on our knees on the floor of course.

View of wishing papers tied to Yakuo-ji temple overlooking Hiwasa town, eastern Shikoku. This is one of the sacred 88 pilgrimage temples (Buddhist) of Shikoku.

The famous Todoroki Falls, in the Iya Valley district. A sacred shinto place of worship - hence the offerings of sake.

Sam under the wedded rocks at Cape Muroto, southern Shikoku.

Cape Muroto again; reputedly the doorway to the land of the dead.

Sam and Ephraim on top of Kochi castle.

Dolls at a temple in Kochi, dedicated to children.

Buddhist jizo, facing out to sea.
