In Paris we rented out an apartment in the 6th for the week. It was very sweet, better-appointed than we expected, with a lovely internal courtyard as in all the best old apartment buildings in Paris. We mostly mooched around Paris, eating vast quantities of cheese and ritually bathing ourselves in the always excellent espresso. We stuck our head into a few churches, watched old men chewing the ends of their baguettes on the street, gulped red wine at street tables in the Marais. We freaked ourselves out in the catacombes, where 18th- and 19th-century bones had been artfully arranged in a tribute to death. A day trip to Versailles provided opulent vistas and a pre-Revolutionary frisson. Parisian for a week: we were despondent when we left.

London
In London, we mainly caught up with Max & Deanna and old friends. Every day was dim and grey, but we wallowed in the freedom of speaking English for the first time since 2004. London was much as we remembered, though viewed through Japanese eyes it was dirtier, more dangerous; but it also felt like home, or something close to it.

Happy New Year
A very belated Happy New Year to our faithful followers. Sorry we haven't posted any of our recent adventures yet, but we have good excuses:
1. In our rush to leave the house at 5:30am, Fiona left her digital camera at home when we went to Europe, which means we've been waiting on some Holga shots to be developed... then they have to be scanned, processed, etc., all of which is time-consuming;
2. Fiona's parents have been with us for the last while, which has meant more photos (good) but no time at home to post.
3. We suck.
London and Paris were great, and Hakone and Kyoto with the Bakers were also fantastic. Photos soon, we promise.
Oh, the above photo is us at our New Year's Eve dinner in Paris. The restaurant guy took our photo as we were leaving and printed it on the spot. He thought we were being all John-Travolta-cool; little did he know we were just being J-cute.
